Works are inspired by a seasonal pond on her property.
“The pond does the painting for me. I love the dead branches and grasses. They are like markings on a blue ground. The deeper dead grasses are decorative swirls like french ormolu. I can explore colour field, formalism, impressionism, and abstract. I push the composition as far as I can. Some paintings are more pleasant than others. Some I like to scratch the surface with the black dead stems. At times I don’t want anything more than the ripples of blue to get lost in. There is one painting that represents the loneliness I felt at the time.
This series is far from being finished. I think I may have to change up the colour of the branches and see what transpires.
I still, after twenty years, find myself saying – well you don’t see that in New York.”
Joan now lives in Pictou County from New York City.
